  • Kainos, a leading digital transformation provider has picked up the award for Best Public Sector IT Project of the Year, alongside longstanding customer DVSA, in the 2022 UK IT Industry Awards for the digital transformation of the driver theory test. This year marks Kainos and DVSA’s third win at the UK IT Awards, following previous recognition for DVSA’s pioneering predictive analytics tool to detect fraudulent activity and digitally transforming the 85-year-old driver examination process.

Designed to celebrate excellence, the UK IT awards recognises those individuals, projects, organisations, and technologies that have excelled in the use, development, and deployment of IT over the previous 12 months. The awards are regarded as the benchmark for outstanding performance across the UK computer industry.

In the Best Public Sector IT Project of the Year, Kainos and DVSA were recognised for the Theory Test Service (TTS) project which set out to digitally transform driver theory test delivery by adopting leading-edge technologies and supporting a brand new DVSA operating model. This project revolutionised how DVSA delivers the test, the candidates’ experience and brought the service in-house after being outsourced for 19 years, representing one of the most complex digital transformations in UK government. The driving theory test is a rite of passage for 1.6 million learner drivers annually, and often citizens’ first interaction with government. The new service is the largest online testing initiative globally, facilitating three million tests per annum, and lays the foundations for future transformations including autonomous and electric vehicle technologies.

Alex Fiddes, DVSA’s Head of Digital Operations highlights: ‘The project was agile delivery at its best. An exemplar in collaboration across digital, business and operations to transform a behemoth, highly complex service which is critical to ensuring we deliver our strategy of keeping Britain’s roads safe. What’s most exciting is we now have the platform to truly transform the Theory Test in line with emerging autonomous vehicle technologies and enable candidates to take the test at home.’

Head of Digital Services at Kainos, Russell Sloan said: 'We are again delighted to have our industry leading expertise in large-scale digital transformation projects recognised by our peers in the industry. Under challenging timescales and during the global pandemic, our distributed project team delivered one of the most complex UK government digital transformations to date – on time and to budget. It’s very rewarding to see our established partnership with DVSA go from strength to strength and we'll continue to invest in attracting and retaining outstanding people who will transform how the world lives and works.’
