Centra and Supervalu are the latest retailers in Limavady to join forces with NI food waste app, Gander, which aims to help food stores clear significantly more of its reduced to clear, often yellow labelled food items.

The mobile app displays automatically ‘reduced to clear’ food products in real-time, aligning with the stores' POS systems and pushing the reduced food products to the mobile app as they are stickered in-store.

Similarly, when that item is sold it is automatically removed from the app, providing an instant feed of all reductions in-store at any time, with the aim of making it simple and effective for the shopper.

Desi Derby, Marketing Director for SuperValu and Centra in Northern Ireland says: “At SuperValu and Centra, we are committed to making changes which will make a real difference.

"By partnering with Gander, we are reinforcing our commitment to ensure that no food is wasted when it is fit for human consumption and our customers in Limavady will now benefit from easier access to reduced price food products.”

"More and more retailers are understanding the wider importance of cutting waste; it’s what their customers expect and makes good business sense," added Ashley Osborne, Co-Founder of Gander.

"Our team want to support retailers recognise their shared responsibility to work with both shoppers and supply chain partners to commit to a long-term and sustained reduction in food waste levels."

Gander has been rolled out across various locations in the UK and Ireland and has recently celebrated its 100,000 download milestone.

To date, the team said it has successfully saved 1.7m food items from going to waste; equivalent to 1,800 tonnes of CO2 since its launch.
