Nokia has signed a deal with BT to supply replacement equipment for EE's 5G network as it phases out Huawei tech.
Earlier this year, the UK government announced that it would ban technology from chinese telecoms manufacturer Huawei. The plan is to phase Huawei tech out of the UK's 5G network by 2027, starting with a ban on buying new Huawei 5G equipment from 31 December 2020.
The ban follows a US political decision to place Huawei on a list of banned tech companies, placing political pressure on the UK to follow suit. The UK ban was implemented based on advice from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) on the impact of US sanctions against Huawei.
Finnish telecoms firm Nokia has now announced that it has been selected by BT as the largest equipment provider to replace Huawei's tech. It will be supplying antennas and base stations to be used in EE's 2G, 4G, and 5G networks across the UK, including Northern Ireland. Nokia was selected as it already supplies technology to EE's 3G network and around a third of its 4G network.
