The new EU Swim mobile app has been developed that helps swimmers check the quality level of water of seas at beaches throughout Ireland.Ireland's beaches are popular destinations for swimmers, but information on the water quality hasn't been easily available to serious swimming enthusiasts until now. The new EU Swim app has been developed to provide this information to swimmers across Ireland in response to an increase in the popularity of sea swimming and tourism.
This is the first app of its kind, and covers nine beaches across Northern Ireland and Ireland:
- Enniscrone (County Sligo)
- Lady’s Bay (County Donegal)
- Castlerock (County Antrim)
- Portrush East Strand (County Antrim)
- Waterfoot (County Antrim)
- Ballyholme (County Down)
- Ballywalter (County Down)
- Newcastle (County Down)
- Clogherhead (County Louth)
The app was developed as part of a cross-border initiative between University College Dublin (UCD) and Northern Ireland based groups Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute and Keep Ireland Beautiful. It has been described as a great resource for swimmers, and was supported heavily by Northern Ireland's Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
EU Swim project manager Dr Rosemarie Gannon discussed the app in a recent interview: "The EU Swim app is unique because it is the first time that there is an app that provides bathing water quality information at selected beaches in the north and south of Ireland."
