Tech Trailblazers

Tech Trailblazer: Aisling Murray

  • Name: Aisling Murray

    Role: Software Engineer at Civica

What does your typical day look like?

When I first log in in the morning, I would look at emails, look over work I completed the previous day, then look to see what needs done and prioritise work. At 10am I would normally have a standup meeting to discuss the work completed the previous day and what is required from me today. I then get stuck into the work that needs done. I also could be working with the team that test the code, answering any questions they may have.

I am currently studying for a PGCert in Data Science so I go to lectures for that on some evenings in the week!

What are you currently working on?

The team I am part of develop telecoms solutions which involves maintaining and adding new features to provide voice and broadband solutions to customers. This system is mostly back end based.

What inspired you to join this company in particular?

When I was applying for jobs in my final year of Uni, this company stood out to me as they develop so many different solutions for different parts of society today, from the telecoms solutions that I work on to creating services to help the justice community, so it really jumped out to me.

Did you always want to work in this industry (tech)?

Ever since I was a child, I have always wanted to work within the tech industry as I grew up around others so interested in technology.

What’s your favourite part about your work?

My favourite part is that things are always growing and moving in the tech industry so there is always something new to learn about and develop new skills in. I also work with such a great team of people, both my specific team and the wider Civica family.

What would you say to other people considering a job in this industry (tech)?

I would say if you are considering a job in tech to absolutely go for it if you are motivated by constantly learning new things. People are often put off jobs in tech as they think it may be too difficult or they won’t know everything they need to, but I say go for it, nothing can be learned unless you try, and I am still learning every day!

How do you see this technology impacting on our lives?

During the pandemic we can see how tech has really impacted our lives. Most companies have come to realise that now their workers are able to work just as efficiently remotely as they would in the office due to certain technologies being available. Technology has also been able to keep people connected through the likes of online video chat services.

Who inspired you to work in this field?

I would have to say family members! My brother and my cousin have always been heavily involved in exploring gadgets and technology which then also piqued my interest!

What do you consider to be the most important tech innovation or development in recent years?

Artificial Intelligence and machine Learning! These technologies have advanced to help drive cars! As well as helping within the healthcare sector.

What tech gadget could you not live without?

I would have to say my smart watch. I have everything I need on my wrist, from message notifications, to making contactless payments!
