  • Invest NI is inviting businesses in Northern Ireland to join a five-day trade mission to Australia, which will run from 13th to 17th November 2017 and visit two of the country’s largest business hubs: Sydney and Melbourne.

Australia is the fifth largest economy in the Asia-Pacific region, and the 13th largest economy in the world. The country’s high GDP per capita means Australia is also home to the fifth wealthiest citizens in the world, making it an ideal market for Northern Ireland exporters.

With a population of more than 5 million people, Sydney is the largest city in Australia. The city is a major commercial centre with a GDP ten times bigger than that of Northern Ireland, and has strong trade links with other business hubs throughout Asia and Australasia.

Sydney is also a major financial centre, with financial services accounting for 18% of the city’s GDP and many major banks and insurance firms located in the city, making it a promising location for fintech startups that are keen to establish relationships with larger financial services firms.

Melbourne is the second most populated city in Australia with 4.7 million people, and is home to a fast-growing tech sector that employs 60,000 people and contributes around AU$20 billion to the Australian economy.

Melbourne is also home to a burgeoning biotech cluster, with one of the world’s leading biotech firms headquartered in the city and many smaller companies starting up.

The Northern Irish companies chosen to join Invest NI’s trade mission to Australia will be entitled to claim up to 50% of the cost of economy airfares for one delegate, and up to £75 per night towards accommodation for a maximum of 5 nights.

The businesses will also benefit from expert advice and support on doing business in Australia from a range of country experts, as well as direct insights into local market opportunities and conditions.

Invest NI also plans to organise a networking event during the course of the trade mission, which will provide the Northern Irish delegates with the opportunity to meet with local industry representatives.

Northern Ireland businesses can apply to join Invest NI’s Australian trade mission now.
