  • Shopify, one of the world’s leading ecommerce platforms, has confirmed it plans to create 100 new jobs in Ireland to help support its growing army of online retail partners.

More than 400,000 merchants around the world now use Shopify’s cloud-based ecommerce solutions to power their online shops, including hundreds of thousands of SMEs in 175 countries.

Last year alone more than 100 million shoppers spent over $15.3 billion in online shops that were powered by Shopify, almost double the amount spent the year before.

To support this incredible rate of growth, the tech company will hire the 100 new team members in Ireland within the next 12 months, which will take Shopify’s Irish workforce to more than 250 people.

And in a move that is in keeping with Shopify’s mission to use digital technology to disrupt business models and offer business people more freedom and flexibility, those employees will not commute each day to a central office in Dublin or Cork or Galway...they will work remotely, from their homes, from their local coffee shops, or from their local coworking spaces.

Highlighting this innovative approach to hiring and to teamwork, and its potential benefits for employees that require flexible working, Ireland’s Minister for Enterprise and Innovation, Frances Fitzgerald TD, said, “I'm very impressed by Shopify's innovative business model whereby the staff are not based in a central office but can work from home and it is great news that they are creating 100 new jobs.

“This is a really exciting, innovative, company, which is paving the way for more flexible and family friendly forms of working. Their rapid growth in Ireland is a true vote of confidence in what Ireland has to offer cutting edge companies."

John Riordan, Director of Support, Ireland at Shopify, added: “We've seen the benefits of remote culture and how it can be utilised to rejuvenate the west of Ireland and counties like Galway."

Shopify first set up shop in Ireland in May 2015 with support from IDA Ireland, hiring around 50 people in its first year before taking on an addition 100 people last year.

Welcoming Shopify’s continued commitment to its Irish operations, Martin Shanahan, CEO of IDA Ireland, said: "Over the last two years Shopify has championed a truly transformative style of employment across the west of Ireland with all Irish staff working remotely from home. I am delighted that this platform has proven to be such a huge success and is reinvesting in its Irish operations. This IDA Ireland supported investment is an important endorsement of the talent which is available right across the West of Ireland.”
