Russia orders immediate block of Telegram

  • The Russian government is now blocking the messaging app Telegram, according to reports from Tass.

The ruling comes after months of Russia’s telecommunications watchdog, Roskomnxdzor, and the Russian Federal Security Service fighting Telegram for access to their user data through the sharing of encryption keys, which Telegram has refused to do.

Roskomandzor filed the lawsuit last month following Telegram losing appeals against the FSB.

Tass reports that the messaging app will be “blocked immediately”, and will be in place until they provide the decryption keys to the FSB.

Telegram’s lawyer, Pavel Chikov, said in a statement, “The FSB’s requirements to provide access to private conversations of users are unconstitutional, baseless, which cannot be fulfilled technically and legally."
