Uber loses licence to operate in London

  • Transport for London says it will now renew Uber’s license to operate in London, when it expires at the end of the month.

They claim Uber’s “approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications.”

Some of the reasons for TfL’s decision include “its approach to reporting serious criminal offences” and “its approach to how medical certificates are obtained”.

This does not mean, however, that Uber will disappear from London’s roads, as they now have 21 days to appeal the decision, and Uber is able to continue to operate in London until any appeals have been completed.

“All companies in London must play by the rules and adhere to the high standards we expect – particularly when it comes to the safety of customers,” says Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London. “Providing an innovative service must not be at the expense of customer safety and security.”
