Ninetendo Switch sales overtake Wii U

  • The Nintendo Switch has already outsold its predecessor, the Wii U, 10 months after it was released.

    The Switch has sold 14.86 million units worldwide, whereas the Wii U only sold 13.5 million units in five years.

    Over the holiday period the company sold 7.23 million units of the console, an impressive statistic.

    “Switch sales during the holiday season were stronger than expected in Japan, the United Stated and Europe,” Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said at the earnings brief.

    Their latest earnings call highlighted some other impressive numbers too. Their award-winning Super Mario Odyssey has sold 9.07 copies. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 7.33 million copies, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold 6.7 million copies.

    For the nine months ending on December 31st, the company made $1.44 billion in operating profit, from $7.88 billion in net sales.

    As a result, Nintento has revised its forecast for the financial year ending on March 31st, now expecting to make $1.47 billion a 33.3 percent increase from $1.1 billion, their initial prediction.

    This was Nintendo’s most profitable quarter since 2009.

    The company expects Switch sales to reach 20 million this year.
