  • AE Global, an engineering firm based in Maydown, near Derry, and North West Regional College (NWRC), a further education college that serves the North West region of Northern Ireland, have secured £150,000 in R&D funding from InnovateUK and Invest NI, which will be used to develop a cutting-edge software platform designed for business and process management.

The two-and-a-half-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership will see NWRC recruit a software development or IT graduate to help develop the new platform, which will be called DELA (Database of Engineering and Logistical Analytics). The graduate will then help AE Global incorporate the new platform into its business, helping to streamline and modernise its operations.

Dr Fergal Tuffy, Technology Innovation Manager at the NWRC’s Business Support Centre explained: “Knowledge Transfer Partnerships enable businesses to access highly qualified people to spearhead new projects and experts to take their business forward with innovative solutions to help their business grow, and AE Global is a prime example of this.

“At NWRC we have a Centre of Excellence in Software Engineering and have built up a lot of expertise that we will utilise as part of this project. The project will see the recruitment of a highly skilled degree graduate coming from the area of computing, software engineering or IT who will then work to deliver this exciting research and development project for AE Global, under the supervision of NWRC.”

Kieran Connor, Managing Director of AE Global, said: “At AE Global the introduction of DELA in conjunction with the KTP programme is the future in innovative ‘real-time’ information communication.” He added that DELA will be “an intelligent IT database system that tracks and monitors complete workflow from design and manufacture through to installation and commissioning.”

Over the past three years NWRC’s Business Support Centre has engaged with more than 780 businesses to help them overcome strategic challenges and take advantage of new opportunities.
