  • A video game designed by students from Belfast Met, has won the top accolade at awards which focus on the development of science, technology, engineering and maths.

The two students, Ignas Lescinskas from East Belfast and Shannon Turley from West Belfast fought off competition from some of Northern Ireland’s top young innovators to win 'Best Overall Project' at the BEST Awards.

The Creative Media Production (Games Design) students designed Wee kids “Island Escape” – an interactive 3D game for Primary School children that aims to teach essential geometry skills.

The BEST Awards recognises innovation in a wide variety of areas from creative industries, to visual design and life sciences being cultivated by students and lecturers across Northern Ireland’s six Further Education Colleges.

Speaking about the success, Ian McCormick, Head of Creative & Digital at Belfast Met said: “Ignas and Shannon have demonstrated great skill and talent in developing an innovative educational video game that responds to how young people socialise, learn and compete, in order to teach them basic geometry skills.

“To compete and win the overall prize against Northern Ireland’s top future innovators from across all six Further Education Colleges is a tremendous achievement, not only for the students, but for the College itself.

“Both Ignas and Shannon have developed the technical skills and knowledge to flourish in the video game design industry. Hopefully this award will encourage them to further a career in one of the most exciting and innovative areas in computing.”

Ignas Lescinskas said: “We are delighted to win such a prestigious award. As a team, we put a tremendous amount of work into the project and it’s great to see our video game win an award that recognises creativity and innovation
