Sync NI: Junior Writer

  • Sync NI is looking for an ambitious and talented junior writer to join its highly respected editorial team. The vacancy is for an experienced writer, ideally with some tech or business journalism experience, to assist in covering the tech industry, with a particular focus on Northern Ireland business development.

    Sync NI is an online news, views, and interviews website with an integrated tech jobs board as well as a quarterly print magazine: The variety of writing work conducted in the Junior Writer role is appreciable. You will be working in a small but growing editorial team that leads the sector in its coverage of both regulatory and business developments, both locally and worldwide.

    You must be capable of putting forward and originating news ideas on a daily basis and developing ideas from editorial discussions and meetings. You will be comfortable talking to high-level executives, developers, and technical thought leaders. Sound news judgment is vital, along with an ability to put together articles that will be considered valuable by an extremely knowledgeable in-industry audience.

    Sync NI is evolving and we expect the entire editorial team will work towards innovation and improvements in its coverage. This is a challenging and rewarding role that could also suit those with marketing and administration backgrounds, provided there is evidence of exemplary written communication standards in your writing samples.

    KEY TASKS
    • Writing news and analysis for the website on a daily basis to a consistently high standard with an authoritative editorial voice
    • Contributing editorial content to the quarterly magazine as required
    • Light copyediting as required by the company
    • Conducting interviews with leading tech thought leaders and business managers
    • Developing a broad range of contacts within the NI tech industry and attending industry events
    • Completing light administration work as needed to support the editorial team

    KEY SKILLS
    • Interest in covering the tech industry as an independent journalist
    • Impeccable written and oral communication skills, demonstrated in qualifications or experience
    • Strong analytical skills
    • Proven time management, including working to inflexible deadlines, is a must
    • Ideally, a candidate will demonstrate at least some degree of technical capacity
    • Copyediting skills, knowledge of content management systems, experience with marketing, and/or a proven track record in news writing is a bonus.
