SQL Server Technical Lead

  • We are pleased to announce a new SQL Server Technical Lead role opening within Infrastructure Services Group (ISG). 

    This position will be a technical lead role within the global SQL Server DBA team that provides highly available Database solutions to the Allstate Enterprise. You will lead the efforts to support and develop new SQL Server Capabilities, for both on premise and cloud strategy.

    You will partner closely with the SQL Server DBAs, architects, DBA leadership team, and other functional business areas.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):.

    • Understand and apply advanced database administration, management and performance tuning techniques specific to SQL Server
    • Proactively identify resource requirements to ensure high availability of database systems
    • Provide technical advice and expertise to others
    • Provide advanced technical troubleshooting for applications and database systems with emphasis on post mortems
    • Research solutions to various business and technical problems, evaluate alternatives and be able to present recommendations and justifications to management
    • Configure and tune hardware and software to insure optimum performance and resource utilization
    • Develop advanced shell scripts, SQL scripts in support of database operations
    • Write and maintain documentation describing changes and modifications to all systems and databases
    • Act as technical liaison in support for database related project activities
    • Identify, develop and implement continuous improvement and automation opportunities

     

    Essential Criteria

    • 4-5 years SQL Server Experience in Windows 2012 or higher server environment
    • Experience with virtualized infrastructure (for example VMWare, AWS, Azure)
    • Expert level knowledge as a database administrator working with SQL 2012-2017 environments
    • Advanced knowledge of database administration tasks such as backups, database recovery, security.
    • Experience with SQL Always On, server and database clustering techniques
    • Advanced knowledge of debugging and performance tuning
    • Advanced installation and configuration experience using automation
    • Strong knowledge of high availability and Disaster Recovery architecture
    • Solid experience with the Windows operating system and command set as well as competence with PowerShell scripting
    • Knowledge of at least one of PowerShell, Shell Scripting, Python, Java/JavaScript.
    • Proven experience working with infrastructure components (operating systems, compute, storage, networking, distributed systems, cloud, containers, etc.) and solid understanding of how they impact services
    • Solid written and verbal communications skills
    • Passion for learning and working with new technology.

     

    Desirable Criteria – These criteria may be used where we have a high number of applicants

     

    • Advanced knowledge of hardware, including clusters, RAID, multi-processor architecture.
    • Experience of Agile methodologies
    • Experience of developing strategic roadmaps
    • Knowledge or experience Devops and CI/CD  practices
    • Knowledge of Containerisation and Orchestration Technologies

     

    Hours of work

    • Standard hours Mon – Fri;
    • Flexibility to meet business needs as required;
    • Full time only
