Software Engineer - Java

  • The Team

At Aflac Northern Ireland we’re all about using technology to deliver exceptional customer experiences, and one of the new teams we’re establishing will be responsible for building solutions that do just that. Using web & mobile technologies such as Angular, Ionic and AWS to deliver core capabilities to our policyholders and focusing on a mobile-first, cloud-enabled strategy, making it easy for our customers to interact with us, change policy information, submit claims – all from the device in their pocket. At the same time, we’re building web solutions that will help deliver an omni-channel experience to our policyholders, ensuring that their interactions with Aflac are as seamless as possible.

The intention is for our teams to continually adapt and reinvent their skills and capabilities over time as technologies change and evolve. We provide the right challenges and opportunities to enable your success, you to bring your enthusiasm, the ability to learn quickly, and to take minimum-viable-product technology to produce industrialised solutions for the enterprise. Once you have successfully delivered robust and scalable solutions in one area, there will be a new technology waiting to be explored within our organisation. We’ll be keeping things pretty fresh.

The team will leverage design-thinking, and a customer experience persona-based approach, developing user stories and wireframes that can be leveraged not only for the app build, but also to ensure our business stakeholders understand what is being developed, and what is coming next.

    The Role

We are looking for a Java Engineer who understands mobile platform needs, who gets excited about new technologies and is motivated to learn new skills.  As part of our Agile teams, we will provide you with the opportunity to use the latest technology to serve our customers and sales agents, and apply your skills as part of an exciting new team.

    What you'll be doing

    • Delivering high-quality, secure customer-centric solutions
    • Participating in daily stand-ups and contributing to an Agile development team that values the opinion of everyone in the team
    • Developing and integrating Java application programming interfaces (APIs) for our Mobile applications leveraging Spring Boot and REST.
    • Responsible for unit testing and maximizing test automation as part of the SDLC using a Test Driven Development approach.
    • Listening to the inputs of others and working towards the best solution design that maximises the value to the policyholder, without ego or prejudice
    • Solving complex problems alongside fellow team members
    • Implementing automation through a CI/CD delivery process

    What you should have

Below is an overview of the skills and experience we are looking for, but remember, don’t rule yourself out if you don’t have everything on the list – it’s your intellect and your attitude we are really after.

    Essential

    • 3+ years as a developer/engineer in Java.
    • 3+ years of IT experience with n-tier, database and client server design/development.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work well within a team environment, maximising the different strengths across the team
    • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a Computer Science, Engineering, or STEM subject. Comparable commercial experience may also be considered
    • Key technology experience required for the role: Java, Jenkins, Git, REST, JSON, XML, Web Services, IntelliJ

    Desirable

    • Knowledge and experience of DevOps as part of Agile software development
    • Experience of delivering Agile solutions for customers/clients located in different time zones
    • Commercial experience building APIs for mobile app products
    • Other valuable technologies: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Kubernetes, Docker, SQL & Relational Databases, NoSQL Databases, iOS / Android, JavaScript.
    • An interest in front end frameworks & libraries like Angular or React.

So that’s us. Thanks for taking the time to read this far (pretty impressive in the era of the 280-character tweet). We look forward to hearing from you if you fancy joining a tech innovation company with the agility of a start-up and the stability of a Fortune 500 U.S. company.
