Organiser of NITDF5: IQ, CQ or EQ - What does it really take to build a high performing team?

We're delighted to bring you our fifth Northern Ireland Talent Development & Retention Forum themed 'IQ, CQ or EQ - What does it really take to build a high performing team?'

It's just over a year since our first #NITDF event and in that time we've featured speakers and panellists on a range of topics including:

'AI Automation & the Future of Work', 'Employee Engagement', 'Diversity Equality & Inclusion', 'Bringing Calm to the Chaos' and last time out 'Attracting Talent in the Millennial Era'.

We're growing a great community of top business thinkers and are now delighted to bring you our next event in which we'll be exploring what kind of intelligence we should really be looking for when building teams for success. We all want to hire smart people - but what is smart, are there different kinds of smart and is there any point in hiring for IQ (Intelligence Quotient) alone if people don't work well with others? This event will dig a little deeper than IQ to understand what role CQ (Cultural Quotient) and EQ (Emotional Quotient) have in shaping team success.

Our first speaker, Heather McLaughlin, is Manager of Europe Direct NI, a European Commission Network with over 500 offices throughout each of the 28 member states. She has over 25 years experience managing European partnerships, projects and delivering study visits across Europe. Heather specialises in Cultural Awareness Training which is designed and delivered across all sectors and explores how culture shapes how we act and behave and how misunderstandings arise when we misinterpret different cultural behaviours. In today's multicultural workforce it's easy for people to rub each other up the wrong way and by promoting a better understanding of each other Heather helps teams work better together.

Our second speaker, Paul Barbour, a graduate of the leading MSc in Coaching and Behavioural Change at Henley Business School, is an experienced Executive, Team and Leadership Development Coach with a previously successful 20 year career in Kerry Group PLC. Paul’s extensive experience within Kerry Group included the leadership of large multi-location commercial teams. Paul has a passion for helping people develop their EQ, is driven by his own personal EQ journey, his award-winning research into conflict resolution and the positive changes he witnessed when helping coachees develop their EQ. By developing an awareness of our own behaviours and their impact and having a curiosity about the behaviour of others emotional intelligence helps us to improve our relationships so we can work better with anyone.

Heather's presentation will look at:

  • How to build a team you need to understand your cultural default
  • How your preferred working style is influenced by culture
  • Other cultural working styles and appreciation of different cultural perspectives
  • How you can adapt to develop a high functioning team

Paul’s presentation will address 5 key areas:

  • The emotional brain – learnings from neuroscience
  • Human needs and leadership – the case for developing EQ
  • Getting practical with EQ – developing the 4 agilities
  • Overdoing EQ – the watch outs for the emotionally intelligent
  • Embodied change – neuroplasticity and the growth mindset
