What is Barefoot
Today’s teachers are key to the next generation’s success. CAS and BT are working together to support primary teachers in delivering the computing curriculum through the Barefoot Computing initiative. Resources are aligned to the curricular for all UK nations and include FREE high-quality lesson plans and local CPD Workshops, all designed to help teachers gain confidence in bringing computer science to life in the classroom.
What do Barefoot volunteers do?
In Dec 2016, the Minister for Education in Northern Ireland endorsed the delivery of the Barefoot resources in Computational Thinking in primary schools in Northern Ireland. Barefoot volunteers are trained to deliver the Barefoot resources to teachers in primary schools. They go into schools to talk to teachers about the resources and to work through some examples with the teachers. You will explain that computational thinking is cross curricular and lies at the centre of the curriculum and that through practical activities children will learn how to tackle challenges, solve problems and better understand situations through concepts such as abstraction, decomposition, algorithm, pattern, evaluation and logical thinking.
What support does a Barefoot volunteer get?
You will receive face to face training (approx. 90 minutes) in both the pedagogical approach to delivery and the subject content of the resources. You will then be able to access materials and resources to share with the teachers. You will be ‘buddied’ with another volunteer for extra support when you first start to deliver a session and join the Barefoot Community.
