This event is a direct collaboration with the ‘Machine Intelligence Garage’ arm of Digital Catapult. It represents the first time we are tackling a particular theme, in this case how the manufacturing world is leveraging Artificial Intelligence. While this may appear a quite specific domain this world of problems also contains lessons that are applicable to AI generally and to other industries due to the use of multi-variate, time series approaches.

Manufacturing is a challenging domain space which is also ripe with opportunity (to apply AI tooling), to demonstrate this we will be bringing together a series of speakers from start ups, large organisations and academia to discuss the impacts they are making in this area. From the production line to logistics, we will see how sensor based infrastructure can be combined with layers of machine learning to provide a more comprehensive and intelligent manufacturing process.

Fiacre O’Donnell, Strategic development director, Encirc Ltd

Fiacre joined Quinn Glass in 1998 as production planning manager. Throughout his time at Quinn Glass, rebranded as Encirc in 2014, he has held a number of roles including business development manager and marketing manager. In 2015 was appointed to a new role of strategic development and earlier this year was appointed to the Encirc executive.

Encirc is a market leader in glass container design, manufacture, bottling and logistics solutions for the UK, Irish and Italian food and beverages industries. With over 1,450 employees, it operates from its purpose-built sites in Derrylin, Co Fermanagh, Elton, Cheshire, and Milan Italy, producing more than 3 billion glass bottles and jars annually, and can fill up to 250 million litres of bulk shipped beverages every year.

Glass manufacturing is a 24 hour, 7 days a week operation. Raw materials are fed into a furnace to produce molten glass. Automated machines then make the bottles at speeds of between 45 to 650 bottles per minute. These containers are then automatically inspected and packed. The industry considers itself to have high levels of automation, but most of this has been based on ‘this is the way we do things’. Encirc are challenging these norms and are looking to see how glass can be the most relevant packaging material in the future

Glen Hawe’s PhD was in Bayesian optimisation (10 years ago, before it was called Bayesian optimisation). I implemented an optimizer in commercial CAD software used by manufacturers who need to optimize electromagnetic effects, e.g. supercoductor manufacturers, electron gun designers, MRI magnets, etc.”

In this talk axial3D will discuss the impact of machine learning on our manufacturing of 3D printed anatomy. We have been providing this service for over two years to the healthcare sector. The talk will look at the subject from the software development and manufacturing point of view as well as touching on the economic impact of ML on our growth and development.

Cathy Coomber: Cathy has responsibility for engineering operations within the company, including print productivity, logistics and quality/regulatory compliance.

Niall Haslam: Niall leads axial3D’s software and R&D teams, central to delivering on axial3D's ambitious software plans in the coming months and years. Niall has over 10 years software development experience in both the commercial and academic sectors.
