Monzo has seen a spike in 1p transactions through their app, which can be sent along with a private message, during the social media meltdown yesterday (5 September 2020).
Yesterday, popular social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Facebook all went down for a number of hours, resulting in a social media blackout.
These popular platforms are used by millions of people daily, most of whom use them for instant messaging. With traditional messaging platforms down, many found creative ways to keep in touch with one another.

The online banking company, Monzo, has reported a large spike in 1p transactions through their app at the exact time that Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp went down for a number of hours.
When transferring money to someone through the Monzo app, you can also send a private message, even if it’s as little as 1p.
The company poked fun at the data on their social media accounts joking: “So when Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook are down and you've forgotten how texting works, just use Monzo. All it takes is transferring 1p through the app to start a conversation with someone. If everyone could just do that more often, our data team would really appreciate it. They've never seen such high spikes.”
