Applications close soon for 410 free post-graduate courses at Queen's University

  • Applications close soon for 410 fully funded post-graduate certifications in data analytics, cyber-security, and other tech fields.

The COVID-19 crisis has caused a significant number of businesses and whole industries that are normally profitable to grind to a halt, leading to some employees being furloughed and a large number being made redundant across Northern Ireland. The NI tech sector has fared extremely well throughout the pandemic as most firms were able to switch to remote work and are still hiring.

Part of the government's response to the rise in unemployment has been to promote training for tech fields, including software development, data analytics, and cyber-security. As part of that effort, the Department for the Economy announced last month that it would be funding 410 new places on courses designed to help people upskill into the tech sector.

The COVID-19 response Postgraduate Certificates are fully funded courses open to anyone with at least a 2:2 degree in any non-computing subject or the equivalent work experience, providing that their career has been impacted by the pandemic. It was initially designed to provide aid to people who were placed on furlough, but has been extended now that the furlough scheme itself has ended.

Queen's University Belfast will be delivering the courses remotely over a 12-week period in the following areas:

    • Software Development
    • Applied Cyber Security
    • Audio-Visual Post Production
    • Data Analytics
    • Biostatistics & Bioinformatics
    • Engineering a Zero Carbon Transition
    • Advanced Chemical Analysis
    • Materials Science & Engineering.

Applications for the courses will close at midnight on 22nd November 2020, and the courses will then run from January 2021 to April 2021. The courses are equivalent to a third of a Masters degree and will be run remotely, so participants will require access to a computer and an internet connection.
