NI Screen's Unity Developer Programme offers game dev certification for programmers

  • Digital Catapult and NI Screen are offering the chance for local software developers to get free Unity Developer Certification and training in the Unity game engine.

If you're a programmer with C# experience and have always wanted to work in game development or are just thinking of reskilling into immersive tech, there's a new programme that may be of interest. Northern Ireland Screen, Digital Catapult, and Future Screens NI have teamed up with Unity to offer free places in a new Unity Developer Programme to get local developers certified in working with the Unity game engine.

The Unity Developer Programme kicks off on August 19th and will run for 11 weeks, ending with an industry-recognised Unity Certified Programmer qualification. The scheme will be run entirely remotely, starting with self-directed learning, followed by two weeks of intensive workshops to develop skills, and finally you'll get a free entry to sit the Unity Certified Programmer exam.

The scheme is open to anyone who is comfortable with programming in C# and has 1-2 years of experience with programming in the Unity game engine. No formal background or educational qualification is required, and experience can be from education, professional experience, or even working on personal projects.

NI Screen is keen to emphasise that people from outside the games industry are encouraged to apply, whether you're planning to get a job developing games or want to reskill into VR/AR tech. Participants with other industry backgrounds who have proficiency in 3D modelling software or similar software are also encouraged to apply if they're aiming to work in the Unity game engine.

The course will involve individual programming work in Unity across two complete projects, and will cover the following areas:

    • Programming core interactions
    • Working in the art pipeline
    • Developing application systems
    • Programming for scene and environment design
    • Optimising for performance and platforms
    • Working in professional software development teams

To apply for the course, send over a CV and one-page cover letter to NI Screen's Interactive Manager Rory Clifford at rory@northernirelandscreen.co.uk explaining how you meet the programme's criteria and why you're interested.
