Several UK internet providers begin automatic compensation for loss of service

  • Several UK ISPs have begun offering automatic compensation for service outages, giving customers £8 per day for loss of service.

When your internet connection goes down, there's nothing more frustrating than knowing you're paying for a service that just isn't being provided. You're actually entitled to compensation in many of these cases, but applying for that compensation would mean sitting on the phone for hours and isn't reasonable for small interruptions of a few days.

Now several UK Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have signed up to a volumtary Offcom scheme to begin distributing automatic compensation to customers for loss of service. BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Zen Internet have joined the scheme so far, and Hyperoptic, Vodafone, EE and Plusnet have also promised to join.

The compensation that will be automatically delivered under the new deal includes:
     - £25 if an engineer doesn't arrive on time or cancels within 24 hours of the appointment
     - £5 per day for new installations/services that don't start on time
     - £8 per day if your service stps working and is not fully fixed after two working days.

BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Zen Internet have already started providing automatic compensation, while Hyperoptic and Vodafone will begin giving it out this year, EE plans to begin next year, and Plusnet hasn't finalised its timeline for implementing the scheme.
