Kainos and artist PJ Holden to present immersive VR experience for children this weekend

  • Kainos has collaborated with local comic book artist PJ Holden to create DragonSlumber, a huge virtual spectacle aimed at aged eight and up children this year at NI Science Festival.

Kainos has partnered with legendary comic book artist PJ Holden on its upcoming DragonSlumber immersive experience, which is due to be unveiled on 23rd February as part of this year's NI Science Festival. Belfast-based artist PJ Holden is best known for his work on Judge Dredd for 2000 AD, and is also known for work on Judge Dredd Magazine and Warhammer Monthly.

The DragonSlumber experience has been brought to reality through with usage of immersive technology and tools from Kainos, supported by Digital Catapult NI. The event is aimed at children aged eight and up, and will use a VR headset to bring a world of giants and dragons to life. It's hoped that people will enjoy the experience, and may be inspired by the technology.

Special quiet time sessions will also be running between 4-5pm on February 23rd for children who may need a calmer and less stressful environment to enjoy the experience, though you should register for these in advance as spaces are limited and tickets are quickly running out.

Innovation Lead Luke Mc Neice spoke about the upcoming event: "We’re proud to have worked with PJ to bring this amazing and innovative idea to life; the scale of it is a spectacle in itself and a powerful way to show what’s possible when technology meets art. It’s totally different to any other immersive experience seen in NI before in that you will actually walk around the space, or 3D ‘world’, rather than staying static with the VR headset on."

"Digital Catapult NI is delighted to be collaborating on this unique experience," commented Nigel McAlpine, Immersive Technology Lead at Digital Catapult NI. "It's fantastic to see this come to fruition, combining the skills and technical knowledge in the Kainos team, with the considerable creative talents of PJ."
