Sync NI Recap: Top 5 tech stories of the week (Jan 14th - Jan 18th)

  • The year is off to a fantastic start for Northern Ireland's tech scene, with several companies announcing moves into major new refurbished buildings, some amazing new research coming out of Queen's University Belfast, award deadlines approaching, and a major global data breach exposing millions of people's passwords.

    [Visit Post] Major global data breach: Check if your passwords are compromised
    Last night saw the announcement of another major data breach as one of these massive password databases used by hackers has been released to the public. Cyber security expert Troy Hunt initially flagged the breach, which he calls the "Collection #1" Data Breach, when he was sent a tipoff about the database of almost 2.7 billion individual records being hosted on cloud service MEGA. He then processed the list and verified that it contains 773 million unique email addresses and at least 21 million unique known passwords.

    Early detection of disease and detection has always been a major contributing factor to patient health outcomes, with many serious diseases and infections being much more easily treated if they're detected before they've progressed too far.     [Visit Post] Deloitte selects £85m Belfast development for new NI head office
    The past few years have seen massive investment in Northern Ireland's business office space, with some of Northern Ireland's largest companies moving into new multi-million-pound office developments and refurbished spaces. Today Deloitte announced that it's selected the upcoming Bedford Square office development as the location for its new Northern Ireland head office.
