Belfast ranked #1 city for remote workers and digital nomads

  • Proptech company Spotahome has named Belfast as the top city in the world to live in as a remote worker or digital nomad.

The past few years have seen significant change in the tech employment landscape, with an increasing number of companies bringing remote contractors on board for projects to reduce costs and bring in specialists in particular fields. An increasing number of tech workers are giving up the traditional 9-to-5 shift in favour of flexible remote work, making work-life balance and living standards their top priority.

This week proptech company Spotahome released a new report on the best cities for this type of digital nomad to live in, with Belfast beating cities such as Miami, San Francisco, and Luxembourg to take the top spot. Spotahome started in Madrid back in 2014 and expanded into the Irish rental market last year, disrupting the traditional rental model for medium- to long-term leases and taking the risk out of rental for remote workers moving country.

The company's Digital Nomad Index scores each city on factors such as internet speed, quality of co-working spaces, rental and living costs, and migrant acceptance. Despite coming low in startup score and annual sunshine hours, Belfast topped the chart on internet speed and its excellent work-life balance pushed it over the edge to take the number 1 spot.
