Tourism Ireland success at We Like Travel awards for best use of social media

  • Tourism Ireland has been voted the number two tourist board for best use of social media in France.

The award ceremony – organised by We Like Travel, an agency specialising in social media and travel – took place at IFTM (International French Travel Market) Top Résa in Paris, the largest travel trade exhibition in France, which is taking place this week.

Tourism Ireland came in second place in the “best overseas destination” category – with Mauritius Tourism voted number one and VisitBritain number three. The criteria by which the tourist boards were evaluated included social media strategy, presence and performance on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

As part of its overall marketing strategy, Tourism Ireland is using social media in a host of creative ways to inspire potential holidaymakers to visit the island of Ireland. The organisation has more than 200,000 fans on Facebook in France (4.3 million worldwide), almost 40,000 followers on Twitter and almost 6,000 followers on Instagram.

Monica MacLaverty, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Southern Europe, said: “Social media is now an integral element of Tourism Ireland’s overall promotional programme, so we’re delighted to receive this award. We are constantly looking at new and creative ways of highlighting the island of Ireland here in France – using great photos, videos and a range of engaging content to spread positive word-of-mouth about the holiday experience here with our fans and followers.”

Monica MacLaverty continued: “France is one of the top four markets for tourism to Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland and Tourism Ireland is rolling out a busy programme of promotions in France this autumn – aimed at boosting late season travel and at positioning us well for 2019.”
