  • Pupils from Old Warren Primary School in Lisburn launched a brand new MoneySense programme from Ulster Bank for children aged five to eight as part of the school’s annual Financial Capability Week.

The new interactive online content was developed by Ulster Bank following extensive research amongst teachers, parents, pupils and education experts and provides teachers and principals with relevant curriculum linked activities, games, videos and worksheets. These are delivered in class by teachers with Ulster Bank staff volunteer support and can be followed at home up using online resources by pupils and their parents to enhance children’s confidence through independent learning.

MoneySense modules focus on money safety and management, currencies and finance globally and money matters of the future. The site www.mymoneysense.com provides a range of curriculum linked resources and with the new content for children aged 5-8, Ulster Bank is the only bank to offer a financial capability programme that spans students P1 to Year 14 (5-18 year olds).

Sean Campbell, principal of Old Warren PS  said the school was very pleased to be the first primary school locally to utilise the new Key Stage 1 content particularly as it dovetailed with Old Warren’s Financial Capability Week which finished Friday 27th May.

“Our Financial Capability Week aimed to get our pupils energised about money management in a fun, practical and exciting way. Our younger pupils in P1-P3 created cakes and sweets and learned about product costs and sales whilst our older students took part in a range of financial activities as part of their maths curriculum. All year groups planned, organised and costed out an end of week party and also sold products at the school’s Mini-Fair on Friday afternoon.

“As a school we’re delighted to be part of Ulster Bank’s MoneySense programme of activities and avail of the staff volunteer support and online resource material to augment and enhance the in-school teaching and learning. Financial Capability is a long term investment in our pupils helping them prepare for work and life generally in the future.”

Jill Smyth, Community Programme Manager at Ulster Bank said:

“Our overall MoneySense programme was completely re packaged and revamped at the end of last year and now in 2016 we’re thrilled to add in the last piece of the jigsaw with our new online content for five to eight year old pupils. MoneySense aims to make learning feel real, relevant and fun for all age groups and equip young people with the financial know-how and understanding to help plan for the future.”
